GENDER: Female NAME: Patti HOBBIES: Sniffing. It's my favorite way to discover new things. NAMESAKE: Patti Smith, considered the “punk poet laureate,” was born in Chicago in 1947. She is a 2007 inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is 47th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest artists. Smith has had a considerable impact in the music world. Musicians such as Michael Stipe of REM, Courtney Love of Hole and Madonna all credit Patti Smith as one of their biggest musical influences. WHEN I GROW UP: I was told that if I have a good sniffer that I will make the perfect medical alert dog. How wonderful would it be if I could bring peace of mind to a family with a child affected by a seizure disorder? COLLAR: Green
GENDER: Female NAME: Gilda HOBBIES: Power napping. NAMESAKE: Gilda Radner is considered one the most iconic comedians of the 20th century. Radner was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live where she developed several much beloved characters including, Roseanne Rosannadanna and Baba Wawa. Her characters and impressions garnered her an Emmy Award and she was posthumously awarded a Grammy for Best Spoken Word of a Non-Musical Recording for her autobiography, It’s Always Something. Her battle with ovarian cancer brought much needed awareness and attention to the disease. Following Radner’s death, her husband--Gene Wilder--co-founded Gilda's Club, a community organization for people with cancer, their families and friends. WHEN I GROW UP: I have been told I get to choose my career and my person. So I am excited to see what tasks I like best to help me hone in on my training and placement path. COLLAR: Gold
GENDER: Female NAME: Simone HOBBIES: Dreaming of all the adventures I will go on after I get to choose my person. NAMESAKE: Simone de Beauvoir lived her 78 years as a French writer, intellectual, existential philosopher, political activist, feminist and social theorist. Originally reluctant to call herself a feminist, she is the author of one of the most influential feminist works, The Second Sex. Written in 1949, The Second Sex declared that “one is not born but becomes a woman.” WHEN I GROW UP: I would love to be placed with a military veteran with PTSD. I can help give them the confidence they need to go on new adventures because adventures are so cool! COLLAR: White GENDER: Female NAME: Maya HOBBIES: Snuggling in a warm pile with my brothers and sister. NAMESAKE: Maya Angelou wore many hats in her lifetime, most notably as an American poet and memoirist. Over the course of her 86 years she also fought for civil rights and supported the work of both Malcom X and Martin Luther King, Jr. She became proficient in several languages. Other hats she wore include singer, actor, essayist, playwright, lecturer, professor, cook and avid card player. Her greatest gift was telling her truth and inspiring others to do the same. NAMESAKE: Ralph Waldo Emerson was a 19th century philosopher, essayist, poet and lecturer who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. Transcendentalism was strongly influenced by Hindu texts on philosophy of the mind and spirituality. A core belief of transcendentalism is in the inherent goodness of people and nature. He espoused some of the basic tenets of Transcendentalism in his 1863 essay, Nature. WHEN I GROW UP: I will take any job that involves lots of quiet moments and belly rubs. COLLAR: Pink
GENDER: Female NAME: Tina HOBBIES: Making the people I meet smile. NAMESAKE: Tina Fey has been an influential and award-winning comedian, writer, actor and producer since beginning her career as a feature player at Second City in Chicago. She then moved to Saturday Night Live as a writer and performer for 9 years before she developed the critically-acclaimed television series 30 Rock and starred as the main character, Liz Lemon. In 2008, the Associated Press gave Fey the AP Entertainer of the Year award for her Sarah Palin impression on SNL. In 2010, Fey was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, becoming the youngest-ever recipient of the award. WHEN I GROW UP: I've heard ADW student trainers are going to help me grow into a SUPER PUP, so I'm eager to return the favor and assist them in building self-confidence and compassion during afternoon classes and summer camps. GENDER: Female NAME: Beryl HOBBIES: Exploring the world around me. NAMESAKE: Beryl Markham was a British-born, high-spirited and outspoken adventurer, pilot, horse trainer and author. She spent her early years in Kenya with her father and eventually became the country’s most successful horse trainer. After years flying over the African bush, Markham became the first person to fly solo across the Atlantic from East to West. WHEN I GROW UP: I hope mass events are replaced with peace and snuggles by the time I get to work, but I will learn how to provide solace and safety during the aftermath, just in case. COLLAR: Yellow
GENDER: Male NAME: Graham HOBBIES: Figuring out how to use my legs! NAMESAKE: Katherine Graham was an American publisher and the second female publisher of a major American newspaper. She led her family's newspaper, The Washington Post, for more than two decades, overseeing its most famous period: the Watergate coverage that eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon. The convergence of the women's movement and Graham's control of the Post led her to promote gender equality within her company. She became the first female Fortune 500 CEO in 1972, as CEO of the Washington Post company.
